oh-oh, homework rework

I saw examples of what we need to do that Jason posted today...

I did it differently...I actually did to my drapery what we were doing in class, I divided it in those rectangular kind of planes, it ended up looking like a spider web, and I didn't like that, but I thought that was what we are expected to do..

so here I am ...starting from scratch.

my charcoal pencils stopped getting along with my sharpener, and I started using knife to sharpen them. It works so much better!!

Drapery Planar Analysis

So, I've just finished working on our drapery homework. I was glad I didn't have to draw my kitchen again :) Here are some pictures of my still life:

I liked arranging the drapery, I put two piles of books under it to create some shapes. Also the whole planar analysis is interesting to me, I've never done it before, and it does help me to really as Jason says "reach the objects with my eyes" and try to really feel their shape and volume. The planar analysis of the drapery was tricky, I did several sketches of different fragments of it, and whenever I tried to break it in planes, it just stopped looking like a drapery!! A lot depends on line weight and how you use it...and it takes a lot of practice to figure it out. I'm only in the process of figuring it out :)

Drawing with charcoal pencil was irritating and very messy, especially in combination with the ruler! Ruler messes up everything!!! Charcoal though messy, creates a very good effect, it's so much stronger and creates so much more contrast compared to a regular pencil. I like how it looks on paper. I had to spend quite some time to clean my drawing with an eraser. I think I'm happy with it. I don't have much surroundings, hope it's OK.

PS: When looking, I was surprised how many artists widely used 1 point perspective, I never paid attention before! Examples of 2 and 3 point perspective were much harder to find, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if somebody in our class already used my 3 point perspective example :)

Barcodes and Barnett Newman

So, I've just finished working on our first homework..

It took me much more time than I thought it would! :) It was interesting. At first I was trying to play with variations of patterns of lines' density and intensity, but by the 5th row I ran out of patterns.. and also realized that there's another way to do this assignment. What if I placed my sheet of paper horizontally instead of vertically?..

I read a little about Barnett Newman, an abstract painter, who did paintings with vertical lines. I wonder what was going through his mind when he was working on them...was he really putting some kind of idea in them, or was he just trying to create something unusual that everybody could interpret in their own way?..

Personally, I was thinking of zebras and piano keys as I was working on this homework >>

Hello everybody!

Welcome to my drawing blog. It's my first semester at MCA and a first serious class of drawing, so I'm a little nervous about how it will go. But I'm much more excited than nervous. My main goal for this class to learn and apply new skills, get better at what I can and enjoy the process :)
